COUNTY CODES
Map Courtesy of Digital-Topo-Maps.com
Jefferson, Mobile, & Montgomery were given first numbers as being the most populous counties. The remainder of the counties were then issued in alphabetical order. In 1955, when registrations in Jefferson County reached "1-99999", it was necessary to add a letter after the county code prefix creating the plate number format of "1A-#####". "1B" (1960-76) and "1C" (1971-73) were also introduced. "2A" was introduced for Mobile County in 1961-1969. The bicentennial base plates of 1976 did not have a county code number. Instead, a sticker with the county name was issued and placed at the bottom of the plate. In 1981, at the conclusion of the bicentennial base plates, the Legislature the county code system mandatory. From 1984, all plates have an alpha character between the county code and numerical serial except Madison County.
