RECREATIONAL VEHICLE

Recreational vehicle:  This class is for recreational vehicles, such as motor homes.

The plate number format is, from left to right, the county code prefix, the "R" plate code and vehicle weight code number, then the plate number.  The vehicle weight codes are as follows:

"R1" = less than 8,000 lbs.

"R2" = 8,001 lbs. to 12,000 lbs.

"R3" = 12,000 lbs. to 18,000 lbs.

"R4" = 18,001 lbs. to 26,000 lbs.

"R5" = 26,001 lbs. to 33,000 lbs.

"R6" = over 33,000 lbs.

2002 "Stars Fell On" graphic base:  This design was introduced in 2002 ("2002" expiration sticker).  Across the top of the plate are the words from an old song about Alabama.  The plate number format had a county code prefix followed by either a "R0" or stacked "R/0" (the "0" being the weight code explained above), and then an all-numeric plate number.  The county code numbers can be found at this link for the Alabama county codes page.
