EXEMPT

Important note on sales of these plates:  Due to the validity of these plates and the fact that I'm in California myself, I must restrict sales of these plates only to addresses outside California and/or ALPCA members.  In addition (due to a recent occurrence), I must received, in writing, that the purchaser does not work for the government or law enforcement and will not bring the plates into California.

1970 blue base:  This yellow/blue type coincided with the passenger plates of the same design.  As with the previous yellow/black design, there are two types.  The "E" in a diamond signifies the vehicle as state owned (such as for the California Highway Patrol), while the "E" in an octagon is for use on vehicles owned by other lesser governments, such as county or city (such as police, sheriff, schools, etc.).

1982 graphic sun base:  This short-run design was, in my opinion, the best design ever produced by the state.  It originally began as an extra-fee alternate design from 1982 through 1986, but in 1986 the California legislature passed a law requiring license plates to be reflective beginning in 1987, thus putting an end to production of the unreflective blue plates.  In the beginning of 1987, the plate became a no-extra-fee regular design, but later in the year, the state changed to the cheaper embossed "CALIFORNIA".  Therefore, even though the plate was produced from 1982-1987, it was a "regular" issue for less than a year.  As with the previous designs, there are two types.  The "E" in a diamond signifies the vehicle as state owned (such as for the California Highway Patrol), while the "E" in an octagon is for use on vehicles owned by other lesser governments, such as county or city (such as police, sheriff, schools, etc.).

1987 embossed "CALIFORNIA" base:  The following design replaced the setting sun graphic design and has the state name embossed.  As with the previous designs, there are two types.  The "E" in a diamond signifies the vehicle as state owned (such as for the California Highway Patrol), while the "E" in an octagon is for use on vehicles owned by other lesser governments, such as county or city (such as police, sheriff, schools, etc.).

1997 "CA EXEMPT" base:  When the state reached "999999" for local governments (octagon "E"), a new "CA EXEMPT" design was released for use on both state and local government vehicles.  Prior designs remained in use until those vehicles were retired.  This plate uses a 7-digit all-numeric format beginning with "1000001".
