TRUCK, COMMERCIAL

This is the commercial class of truck with the suffix letter being a weight code and has a fiscal year of July 1 to June 30.  In later years, the "B" class was separated from the commercial truck plate series and is for light weight trucks under 8,000 lbs (such as pick-up trucks).  Originally, this class was part of the truck class, but because there are so many more of this class than the heavier weight classes, the "B" class was separated out to become it's own class.  The "B" class had a different design than the heavier trucks and had a staggered renewal with a sticker.  Click here to see the B-truck page: Illinois B-truck.  The weight code letters are as follows (this list is not perfect as the weight codes can vary from year to year and in some years, some letters were excluded and other letters, like "Q" and "V", included:

"B" = under 8,000 lbs.
"C" = 8,001 to 10,000 lbs.
"D" = 10,001 to 12,000 lbs.
"E" = 12,001 to 14,000 lbs.
"F" = 14,001 to 16,000 lbs.
"G" = 16,001 to 20,000 lbs.
"H" = 20,001 to 24,000 lbs.
"J" = 24,001 to 28,000 lbs.
"K" = 28,001 to 32,000 lbs.
"L" = 32,001 to 36,000 lbs.
"N" = 36,001 to 41,000 lbs.
"P" = 41,001 to 45,000 lbs.
"R" = 45,001 to 50,000 lbs.
"S" = 50,001 to 59,000 lbs.
"T" = 59,001 to 64,000 lbs.
"V" = 64,001 to 73,280 lbs.
"X" = 73,281 to 77,000 lbs. (started in 1985)
"Z" = 77,001 to 80,000 lbs. (started in 1985)

According to the Illinois website (as of February 4, 2012), the weight classes are listed below.  It is not known when this list was established, so I don't know if there are any differences between the list and what was available prior to 2012:
