PASSENGER, "89" wheat base

Passenger: Up to 1975, Kansas issued plates yearly. Beginning with the embossed "76" plate, renewal stickers were issued yearly after a new multiyear base was issued, the first year of expiration being embossed, or screened onto the plate in the stickerwell. Because Kansas county codes the plates, and, at times, includes a month code, there are a number of possible varieties. I have a very nice (and large) selection of varieties, including the county and month codes. So that downloading a Kansas passenger page doesn't overload your computer, I have split them into the following bases, each being a link to my website page of that type:

1989 wheat base: The following design began in 1988 (screened "89" expiration in stickerwell) and features a stylized "KANSAS" at the top center and shafts of wheat in the center of the plate. There was dissatisfaction with the design of the state name, so the name was later redesigned with a more plain "KANSAS". It is unknown when this redesign took place. In the top left corner is a sticker with the two-letter county code (see county code page) and it comes in two different sizes. The year sticker will have "AUTO" on it.

Stylized "KANSAS":

The following two plates are unusual because of the sticker. Normally, the sticker would have "AUTO" or "TRUCK", for example, to indicate what class of vehicle the plate is on, but these two are blank where the class designation would ordinarily be. Also, it is highly unusual to have sticker expirations earlier than the date on the plate. These are "88" expiring stickers on an already screened "89" plate.
