1987 lobster "00000 A" base:  This was Maine's first regular passenger graphic.  The plate number format originally used on this design was "00000 A" and picked up where the previous black/white design left off.  When the state reached "99999 Z", the format went to a double-letter "0000 AA" format, beginning with "AA" then going to "BB" and "CC" and so on.  When "ZZ" was reached, the state then went to sequential "AB" through "AZ" blocks before advancing to "BA" through "BZ" and so on, obviously skipping the previously issued double-letter blocks, such as "BB".  Since the state does not use leading zeros, single-number, double-number, etc. plates also can be found on this design.

1990 lobster double-letter base:  As explained above, when the state reached "99999 Z", the format went to a double-letter "0000 AA" format, beginning with "AA" then going to "BB" and "CC" and so on.  Since the state does not use leading zeros, single-number, double-number, etc. plates also can be found on this format.

1992 lobster "0000 AA" base:  As explained above for the 1987 and 1990 formats, when the double-letter blocks were exhausted at the end of the "ZZ" block, the state then went to sequential "AB" through "AZ" blocks before advancing to "BA" through "BZ" and so on, obviously skipping the previously issued double-letter blocks, such as "BB".  Since the state does not use leading zeros, single-, double-, and triple-number plates also can be found on this format.

2000 chickadee base:  The following chickadee design began in 2000 ("01" renewal stickers) and continued the "0000 AA" plate number format where the previous lobster design left off.  Since the state does not use leading zeros, single-, double-, and triple-number plates also can be found on this design.
