1979 maroon "80" base:  In 1979, a new multi-year white/maroon base was introduced which had an unpainted lightly embossed "80" below the stickerwell in the center of the plate.  In later years the "80" was removed for the remainder of the series.  This design was issued through 1997 when it was replaced by the "98" graphic base.

1997 graphic base:  This design began in 1997 and originally had a "98" screened expiration box in the lower right corner of the plate.  Subsequent renewal stickers were to be placed over the "98", but sometime in the mid-2000s, vehicle owners were instructed to place the sticker in the center of the state.  Shortly thereafter, the screened box "98" was removed from the design.  Later, the design was modified to include a stickerwell in the center of the plate, similar to the "80" base design, to place the stickers.  Originally, the plate number format was "000 AAA", but in early 2006, the state reached "999 ZZZ" and changed to a "0AA 00A" format.  Therefore, the different types are as follows:

Type I: screened "98" in bottom right corner, renewal stickers placed on top of the "98"
Type II: stickerwell box in center of the plate with screened "98" in bottom right corner
Type III: stickerwell box in center of the plate, no "98" in bottom right corner
Type IV: change to "0AA 00A" format
