ORIGINAL 1935 COUNTY
ASSIGNMENTS
The State was divided into 5 groups of counties each having a
different numbering format:
Central (Columbus) (all numeric and single-letter prefix): Plates which were all numeric and used no
letters were issued from Franklin County which included Columbus, the
capital. A group of counties around Franklin County used serials
with a single letter prefix. These counties included Delaware,
Fairfield, Franklin, Knox, Licking, Madison, Marion, Morrow, Pickaway,
and Union.
Northwest (Toledo) (single-letter suffix): This group of counties used a serial with
a single letter suffix. The counties in this group were Defiance,
Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, Williams, Wood.
and Wyandot.
Northeast (Cleveland) (double-letter prefix): This group of counties issued serials
with 2-letter prefixes. Counties in this group included Ashland,
Ashtabula, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain,
Medina, Richland, and Wayne.
Southwest (Cincinnati) (double-letter suffix): This group of counties issued plates
with 2-letter suffixes. This group of counties included Adams,
Allen, Auglaize, Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Clinton,
Darke, Fayette, Greene, Hamilton, Hardin, Highland, Logan, mercer,
Miami, Montgomery, Paulding, Pike, Preble, Putnam, Ross, Scioto, Shelby,
Van Wert, and Warren.
Southeast (Akron) (single-letter prefix AND suffix): This group of counties issued plates with
both a letter prefix and a letter suffix. This group of counties
included Athens, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Gallia,
Guernsey, Harrison, Hocking, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lawrence,
Mahoning, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Portage,
Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, Vinton, and Washington.
From 1983 through to the 2003, the county name has appeared on a
separate sticker, and no other form of jurisdictional coding has been
used.
Alphanumeric Block Index
By 1968, all counties were listed as having started at number 51 in
each letter series, except for Henry, Highland, and Knox Counties which
started at #76, and Lake which began at #101. The low numbers were
reserved for special issuance directly from Franklin County.

All single, double, and 3 letter plates without numerals plus plates
with letters and numerals from 1 to 50 are issued from the BMV.
Some cases of plates with letters and numerals 51 to 100 and the series
1 to 999 without letters are also issued by the BMV. Series "RE
1001" to "RE 9999" and "RP 1000" to "RP 9999" are replacement plates.
