Ohio began using multiyear plates in 1976 as follows: 1976 base: red/white used without a sticker for 1976 and renewed each year after 1976 with renewal stickers; plate number format continued the county coding from previous yearly issues. 1980 base: blue/reflective white used to begin staggered registrations; 3/4" embossed "OHIO" top; sticker boxes lower corners; after January 1, red "EXP 80" stickers were issued if your registration expired after January; if it expired in January 1980 you received a white/blue "EXP 81" sticker; "AAA 000" plate number format; serial blocs used - "AAB"-"LZZ" and "MTF"-"MXC". 1980 base: blue/reflective white; 1" screened "OHIO" top; sticker boxes lower corners; 3/8" outline of the state used as a separator in the alpha-numeric serial; changeover to the graphic base started in the "MAA" to "MTF" series and "MXD" to "NMA" used the white/red "EXP 80" sticker OR white/blue "EXP 81" sticker; "AAA 000" plate number format. 1981 base: blue/reflective white; steel; "AAA 000" plate number format. 1985 base: green/reflective white; screened "OHIO" top; number series begins at "010-AAA". 1991 base: blue & red/reflective white; began with "92" expiration sticker; screened blue "OHIO" top; immediately beneath is screened red "the heart of it all!" in script; "AAA 000" plate number format with small state outline used as separator; county sticker bottom; plates ordered by mail received plate numbers in the "TAA 010" through "XZZ 999" series; plates secured personally received from "AAA 010" through "SZZ 999" or "YAA 010" through "ZZZ 999". 1996 base: blue & red/reflective background of gold at bottom fading to white at top; screened blue "OHIO" top; immediately beneath is screened red "the heart of it all!" in script; "AAA 0000" plate number format; stickers may be used to indicate county name at the bottom. 1997 base: blue & red/reflective background of gold at bottom fading to white at top; screened blue "OHIO" top; immediately beneath is screened red "BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION" in block lettering; "AAA 0000" plate number format; the changeover from "the heart of it all!" to "BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION" bases occurred somewhere between "ARR-5835" and "ARR-5912".
2003 base: blue/reflective white with white/red "1803 Ohio
Bicentennial 2003" at top and white/blue "BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION" at
bottom; bicentennial logo left center; "AA00AA" plate number format;
