Interesting note about 1975 Oklahoma plates: A fire destroyed the license plate manufacturing plant in the Oklahoma prison at which they were made, so 1975 Oklahoma plates were produced by the Illinois prison manufacturing plant. You will find that the dies and thickness of the plates are similar to the Illinois plates of the same period. 1976 (red/reflective white) Comanche County vg $3.00 "CH-297" (12109)

Debossed "79" base: This blue/white plate has an unpainted debossed "79" in the top right stickerwell and was used through 1993 ("94" expiration sticker). The "79" can be seen by looking at the back of the plate. The plate letters continued the county coding used in past years. Click Oklahoma county codes for an explanation.
Debossed "81" base: The following design began in 1980 and ran concurrently with the previous blue/white debossed "79" base. The plate has an unpainted debossed "81" in the top right stickerwell and was used through 1993 ("94" expiration sticker). Just like the "79" plate above, the "81" can be seen by looking at the back of the plate. For the first time, a very small silhouette of the state of Oklahoma acts as a separator between the county code and the numeric part of the plate number. The plate letters continued the county coding used in past years. Click Oklahoma county codes for an explanation. 1990 (green/reflective white) g $2.00 "YH 4470" (11884)
1982 sun graphic: Oklahoma's first graphic featured a setting sun at the bottom of the plate with the familiar "Oklahoma is OK!" slogan superimposed over it. This new design also introduced a new plate number format "AAA 000" and was again county coded, although with new coding (see Oklahoma county codes).
1989 peace shield graphic base:
1994 "NATIVE AMERICA" base: This base is a modified version of the previous base above. The design retains the peace shield in the center of the plate, but the larger state name uses a different font and the slogan "NATIVE AMERICA" appears at the bottom of the plate. This base is also county coded (see Oklahoma county codes) using a "AAA 000" plate number format. Counties that ran out of plate numbers flipped to a "000 AAA" format. Many counties have used more than the blocks listed in my county code page. Therefore, I've only listed below when I could properly identify the county. 1999 (green/reflective white) Oklahoma County vg $5.00 "QPW 656" (12049)
