PASSENGER 1972 black/white base: This base was the first Rhode Island plate to use the "OCEAN STATE" slogan and was issued until replaced by the blue/white "80" dated base.

Undated base: The following design is all embossed, but with no embossed year like the previous designs.
The following design has the "OCEAN STATE" and "RHODE ISLAND" screened onto the plate.
1996 wave graphic: In late 1996, Rhode Island began this new graphic design. It took the state until the end of 1998 to replace everyone's plate with this new design. There are three plate number formats used on this design for passenger vehicles. The plate number formats "AA-000" and "00000" were used since the beginning or thereabouts, then in 2007 the state began the "000-000" format starting at "710-000". "AA-000" format:
