Passenger: The number on the left side of the plate letters is the county code.  See the South Dakota county codes page for the listing.

1976 bicentennial graphic:  The following design began in 1976 (screened "76" in the bottom right corner) and was renewed yearly with stickers.  At the top was a graphic Mount Rushmore at the left in blue with red and white stripes to the right to symbolize the American flag.  For the first time, the state did not use county coded numbers, using instead a county coded two-letter code (click South Dakota county codes to see that page) in a "AA 0000" plate number format.  Two stars were used as a plate number separator. 

1981 county name graphic:  The following design began in 1981 (screened "81" in the top right corner) and was renewed yearly with stickers.  The graphic Mount Rushmore was now at the bottom right of the plate.  For the first time, the state placed the county names on the plate in the form of a sticker placed at the top of the plate.  The plate format of "AAA 000" was not county coded but the two stars were again used as a plate number separator.

1987 statehood centennial graphic:  The following design began in 1987 (screened "87" in the top right corner) and was renewed yearly with stickers.  This base saw the return of the numbered county code system used previous to the bicentennial design.  A graphic Mount Rushmore remained at the bottom right in blue and "1889-1989" was at the bottom center to indicate the 100th year of statehood.  A "0AA 000" plate number format was used for single-digit county codes and "00A 000" format used for two-digit county codes, the number to the left of the letter(s) being the county code (click South Dakota county codes to see that page).

1990 brown graphic:  The following design began in 1990 ("91" stickers) and features a graphic Mount Rushmore at the right of the plate under the plate numbers.  The background is a reflective brown.  Single digit counties typically used a "0A 0000" plate number format and two digit counties used a "00A 000" plate number format.  For both formats, the number(s) to the left of the letter was the county code (click South Dakota county codes to see that page).

1995 white splash graphic:  The following design began in 1995 ("96" stickers) and features a graphic Mount Rushmore splashed across the entire plate in brown on a reflective white background.  All counties have a letter following the county number.  Single digit counties used a "0A00000" plate number format and two digit counties used a "00A0000" plate number format.  For both formats, the number(s) to the left of the letter was the county code (click South Dakota county codes to see that page).

2000 red/white/blue graphic:  The following design began in 2000 ("2000" stickers) and features a small graphic Mount Rushmore at the bottom of the plate in blue.  At the top, a white "South Dakota" appears on a red bar.  Single digit counties typically used a "0AA 000" plate number format and two digit counties used a "00A 000" plate number format.  On both formats, the number(s) to the left of the letter was the county code (click South Dakota county codes to see that page).  For all counties, when the three digit numeric portion of the plate number was exhausted, the plate numbers on the right of the plate became an alpha with two numerals.  There are two types of "2000" stickers, one that just has the "2000" on it, and the other that has "2000" with the plate number on the sticker.  "2001" stickers and after all have the plate number on the sticker.

This plate went through various changes as follows:

Type I: Embossed plate number on a steel plate
Type II: Flat small font plate numbers on a steel plate
Type III: Flat medium font plate numbers on an aluminum plate
Type IV: Flat large font plate numbers on an aluminum plate (notice that there is less space between
     the red bar and the plate numbers than the two previous types)

2006 full splash graphic:  In 2006 ("2007" stickers), a new full graphic design was introduced with the intention of fully replacing the previous design by year's end.  The number(s) to the left of the letter was the county code (click South Dakota county codes to see that page).  Each county's plate numbers picked up where the previous design left off.  Single digit counties continued to use the "0AA 000" plate number format with the leading number being the county code.  Two digit counties continued to use the "00A 000" plate number format, but went to a "00A A00" format when the original format was exhausted.  Lincoln County #44 went to a "44A AA0" format when the two-letter format was also exhausted.
